Granada is the oldest settlement founded by spain in central america, it is a beautiful colonial town and has some nightlife. the lake of nicaragua is 1 km east of the town, is one of the biggest fresh water lakes on earth and has long deserted shores. almost the whole western side of the lake is side onshore and good year round. the water is muddy brown. you will be the only ones surfing there so better not do it alone. check with the guys from playa copal / costa rica (ca 3 hours south of granada) for more info (mailto: info@kitecostarica.com)
No services at the shore, nearby town of granada has all amenities but no kiteschool or store. as ever do not kite alone and do not expect someone else kiting there.
Corrections...
There are a few errors here. First of all, and most importantly, the season is not all year. December to April is more realistis. Jan, Feb & March are almost always VERY windy- and the kiting is nicer as the level of the lake is lower. The best spot is about 15kms around the lake to the East from Granada. Its a dirt road, but easily passable. I am keeping a blog on this season at http://nicaraguakitesurf.blogspot.com
Down toward Rivas there are some very good spots too, and one at a place called Menco which is half way between Granada & Rivas. Baby & wife for the time being do not permit me to get down there, but i've been in the past and they are fantastic- and windier than Granada.
